Because scientific discoveries are most meaningful when they address society’s needs, we have made innovation a key driver of our work. Our strategy aims to transform knowledge into solutions, ideas into achievements, and talent into key players in the major transitions of our time.
Innovation at the Université Grenoble Alpes
- Grenoble, European Capital of Innovation in 2026.
- The leading European university in innovation.
- The leading French university in terms of patent applications since 2023.
- 630 patent families in the portfolio.
- 10 startups are founded each year.
- 420 research contracts per year with companies.
A unique ecosystem to accelerate innovation
We foster one of Europe’s most successful innovation ecosystems. Researchers, educators, students, engineers, clinicians, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, local governments, and national research organizations all work side by side within the same region. This proximity fosters dialogue, accelerates collaboration, and enables scientific discoveries to quickly find practical applications.
From Research to Innovation
Every scientific breakthrough is an opportunity to create new applications, new technologies, or new solutions to contemporary challenges. We support every stage of knowledge transfer: collaborative research, protection of research results, commercialization, technology transfer, startup creation, and the development of collaborative projects. This initiative is supported in particular by the University Innovation Cluster (PUI Grenoble Alpes), technology maturation and transfer programs, and a network of partners recognized at the national and European levels.
An innovation that goes beyond technology
Innovation is not limited to laboratories or disruptive technologies. At the Université Grenoble Alpes, it also draws on the humanities and social sciences, law, economics, management, arts, education sciences, and sports science. Social, environmental, organizational, pedagogical, or cultural innovation: all disciplines contribute to inventing new ways of understanding and acting upon the world. This interdisciplinary approach is essential to address the complexity of major contemporary transitions.
A Strategy to Support Major Transitions
Innovation is not an end in itself. It is a means of bringing about lasting improvements to society. Whether it’s developing domestically controlled technologies, supporting the ecological transition, improving health, strengthening business competitiveness, informing public policy, or inventing new economic models, we draw on all our expertise to make a tangible impact.
We draw on our areas of expertise, including:
- Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.
- Microelectronics and digital technologies.
- Quantum technologies.
- Energy and Materials.
- The Environment, Risks, and Regions.
- The Humanities and Social Sciences in Support of Transitions.
This strategy is reinforced by the major national programs in which we participate, particularly as part of France 2030.
