Scientific Challenges: Understanding the World to Better Transform It

Ecological and energy transitions, the digital revolution, global health, societal change, and scientific and technological sovereignty: the challenges we face are increasingly complex and interdependent. In light of these challenges, research has never been more essential. At the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA), we are committed to an ambitious, open, and interUniversité Grenoble Alpes al approach to science—one capable of generating new knowledge, fostering breakthrough innovations, and informing public policy decisions.

At the heart of one of the world’s most dynamic scientific ecosystems, we bring together research and innovation stakeholders in our region around a shared goal: to build the knowledge needed to meet the challenges of the future.

Interdisciplinarity to Push the Boundaries of Knowledge

We generate knowledge for progress and democracy. Scientific rigor is our guiding principle. It is applied across all forms of research (theoretical, experimental, field, and clinical) and in all disciplines.

But the major challenges of our century cannot be addressed by any single discipline alone. Climate change, artificial intelligence, health, energy, and social change require us to bring together diverse perspectives and areas of expertise. That is why, at UGA, interdisciplinarity is a method. We foster dialogue between the natural sciences, the humanities and social sciences, engineering, and the health sciences to understand the transformations taking place in the world, inform decision-making, and build the solutions of tomorrow.

Scientific Excellence as a Requirement

All research conducted at UGA is held to the same standard. Academic rigor is not limited to certain disciplines, certain laboratories, or certain methods of knowledge production. It is universal.

Whether it is basic, experimental, clinical, or field-based, every research project is conducted according to the same principles of rigor, integrity, and scientific quality. This shared expectation is the foundation of society's trust in science.

It is this that enables us to generate robust knowledge, contribute to scientific advances that have a lasting impact on our understanding of the world, and conduct research that is recognized as among the best internationally.

Focus our efforts on the major challenges of the21st century

We cannot invest everywhere with the same intensity. We have therefore chosen to focus our efforts on areas where two requirements converge: scientific excellence and societal impact. These research fields bring together our strongest scientific communities, world-class infrastructure, and interdisciplinary collaborations capable of providing solutions to today’s major challenges. We invest in these areas with one goal in mind: to push the boundaries of knowledge and foster the innovations that will help build the world of tomorrow.

Fostering the Sciences of Tomorrow

The future of research also depends on its ability to explore the unknown. Beyond our established areas of excellence, we create the conditions conducive to the emergence of new scientific themes—at the intersection of disciplines and outside traditional frameworks. Support for exploratory projects, mentoring of young researchers, encouragement of scientific risk-taking, and academic freedom: we choose to invest in uncertainty, convinced that major discoveries often arise where no one expects them. Because innovation is not just about answering today’s questions, but also about preparing for tomorrow’s.
