Although our region accounts for only 0.5% of France’s population, it contributes 5% of the country’s scientific output. As the leading European university in terms of patent filings, we are the driving force behind a scientific and technological ecosystem whose influence far exceeds its demographic weight. These results are the product of a model unique in France, patiently built up over decades. Rather than simply being a cluster of laboratories or institutions, we have chosen an integrated organizational structure that fosters collaboration, accelerates discoveries, and enhances the impact of research.
A model based on integration
The “Université Grenoble Alpes ” was born out of a collective ambition: to bring together the region’s academic and scientific resources in a sustainable way through a shared project.
In Grenoble, the strength of research does not rest on a single institution, but on an ecosystem. Université Grenoble Alpes is its pivot.
We thus bring together the major national research organizations operating in our region: the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA), the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), Inserm, the National Institute for Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Research (INRAE), and the National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology (INRIA). As the lead university, we coordinate this network, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and ensure a coherent approach to collective action in order to address major scientific, technological, and societal challenges.
In the immediate vicinity of our campuses, five major international research facilities—among the most advanced in the world—the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the European Magnetic Field Laboratory (EMFL), the LNCMI, and the Institute for Millimeter Radio Astronomy (IRAM)—all provide scientists with exceptional equipment.
This unique concentration of researchers, engineers, students, technology platforms, laboratories, and industrial partners makes Grenoble Alpes one of the most dynamic innovation ecosystems in Europe. It is in this environment that the most ambitious collaborations take shape, the technologies of tomorrow are developed, and solutions to the major transitions of our time are built.
